Emerson Wins Contract at Bang Pakong Power Plant in Thailand

Emerson Process Management recently announced that it has received a contract to replace aging controls for two 300-MW, combined-cycle blocks at the Bang Pakong Power Plant in Thailand. Bang Pakong, which employs two types of generating facilities – four conventional thermal power units and four combined-cycle blocks – has significantly reduced the country’s dependence on imported oil by burning indigenous natural gas. With an installed capacity of 3,670 MW, the plant supplies roughly 15 percent of Thailand’s demand for electricity, and as such plays a vital role in providing efficient and reliable power to drive the country’s ongoing economic and social development.

Under the contract, awarded by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, Emerson will replace outdated Toshiba controls on blocks 3 and 4 with its Ovation® expert control system. The Ovation system will monitor and control the heat recovery steam generator, steam turbine and balance of plant processes. It will also interface to the GE Speedtronic Mark VI gas turbine. In all, the Ovation system will manage approximately 5,600 I/O points per block (11,200 total).

Equipment delivery for Block 3 is expected October 2008 with plant startup slated for January 2009, while equipment delivery for Block 4 will take place July 2009 with plant startup scheduled for October 2009.
Emerson is designing, engineering and supervising this turnkey project.

“Emerson has helped power generators all over the world modernize their existing units,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “After upgrading to our leading-edge Ovation technology, other Emerson customers have experienced improvements in availability, reliability and efficiency that come from operating a highly automated plant. We expect the Bang Pakong facility to experience these same operational advantages.”
