Emerson Selected to Update Controls at Power Station Serving PetroChina’s Dalian Refinery

Emerson Process Management recently announced it is updating the controls at a power station that provides electricity and steam to PetroChina’s Dalian Refinery, located in northeastern China’s Liaoning province. The refinery is expanding its operation, which will boost annual production capacity to 20.5 million tons, making it the largest refinery in China. Emerson will install its Ovation® expert control system at the captive power station, which is undergoing a comprehensive modernization as part of the complex’s overall expansion.

The power station, which is fueled by cracked gas and residual oil – byproducts of the refinery process – consists of three older 25-MW units controlled by outdated PLC control systems, as well as two newer 25-MW units that utilize Emerson’s previous-generation WDPF® distributed control system. There are three distinct phases to the control system project.

First, in September and October 2007, Emerson performed a WDPF-to-Ovation migration for the two newer units. From its inception, Emerson’s Ovation system was designed to allow a straightforward migration path for users of its WDPF systems. Emerson’s migration path allows WDPF customers to retain much of their investment by allowing them to keep existing I/O cards, field cabling, terminations and cabinets; as well as their system engineering investment in control logic, graphics and the database. This enables users, such as PetroChina Dalian, to increase the functionality of their control systems in a cost-effective way.

For the second phase of the project, Ovation was installed at the power station’s new auxiliary facility, which includes a deaerated water station, heating exchange station and condensed water station.

Emerson is currently in the third and final stage of the project, completely replacing the PLC controls in the older units with the Ovation system. Once this is accomplished, the power plant will be equipped with a fully integrated control solution utilizing Ovation technology. The Ovation system will perform data acquisition; monitor and control the sequence control system, water treatment control and furnace safeguard supervisory system; and interface to existing turbine controls.

Landslide Technologies Announces Partnership with CustomerCentric Systems

Landslide Technologies, Inc., provider of Sales Workstyle Management solutions, recently announced that CustomerCentric Systems®, LLC has named Landslide as the standard technology platform to complement its subscription-based CustomerCentric Selling® (CCS) training and consulting service. Under terms of the agreement, CustomerCentric Systems® becomes a referring partner for Landslide’s CCS Edition™, a market ready sales workforce management solution that deploys immediately for CCS customers.

Landslide CCS Edition fully integrates the CCS approach of enabling salespeople to collaborate more effectively with their buying audience. The strategic selling software enables organizations to codify the proven CCS selling process, present appropriate selling aids at the proper stage in the sales cycle, identify buyers’ goals and transform sales ready messaging into discreet selling activities.

“Landslide provides an ideal technical environment to house and distribute strategic sales actions over time, and to enable sales teams to sell most efficiently,” said Tim Young, CEO, CustomerCentric Systems®. “But perhaps most importantly, the technology deploys very quickly for our customers, in turn-key fashion. We believe this relationship will further drive adoption of the CCS process and facilitate more pervasive use of it across selling organizations.”

Studies by firms like ES Research Group show that more than 50 percent of the knowledge presented during a sales training event erodes within one month, so firms generally find themselves challenged to reinforce the training from these workshops and ultimately make methodologies stick over time. The Landslide CCS solution solves this problem by providing an ongoing training mechanism that helps sales teams internalize the unique sales process quickly and consistently.

“The CCS/Landslide relationship truly embodies a synergy between technology and the human element of the sales cycle,” said Chris Kiminas, vice president of sales process consulting services for Landslide. “By automating delivery of an actionable sales process in real time, via the Web, we are enabling sales professionals to focus on what they do best—communicating effectively with their customers and prospects to close the deal.”

“The joint solution between CCS and Landslide is the best of both worlds, with a visual workflow and integrated selling tools to help us implement and fine-tune a more efficient selling process,” said Jack Wilson, AVP, account management and administration for Union Switch & Signal. “We have noticed a material uptick in ROI for sales training and message consulting as well as better visibility into the sales pipeline, which has become crucial to helping us close more deals in a tighter timeframe.”
