No way around it, biking in Pittsburgh is quite excellent and BikePGH has been making it better and safer for local cyclists. There’s nothing like riding around Pittsburgh on two wheels!

BikeFest, the region’s annual celebration of biking and bike culture, kicks off Aug. 14 with a fundraiser for BikePGH at the Pittsburgh Opera in the Strip District. Over the following 10 days, BikeFest will feature a series of independently organized rides and events throughout the city.

“What started as a small group of riders has grown into a highly anticipated annual event,” says Scott Bricker, executive director of Bike Pittsburgh. “Cycling enthusiasts around the city have come up great rides for people of all abilities.”

This year’s kick-off party features an earlier VIP event catered by Salt of the Earth, the future Garfield restaurant owned by local star chef and cyclist Kevin Sousa, the VIP party also will feature live jazz by Howie Alexander and friends of Ava Lounge Interval jazz night fame, J.Malls spinning funk and soul from yesteryear, a vodka tasting by alcohol artisans Boyd & Blair. The later party will include music from local DJs, a silent auction, bike raffles and beer from Penn Brewery and East End Brewing Company.

All proceeds from the party will benefit BikePGH and enable the organization to continue its mission of making Pittsburgh increasingly safe, accessible and friendly to bike transportation.
