Greening the Economy, Fringe or Core Business?

The Pittsburgh Eric M. Warburg Chapter of the American Council on Germany, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Technology Council, is hosting a luncheon and discussion with Professor Ernst von Weizsäcker, Dean, University of California Santa Barbara, Bren School of Environmental Science and Management. Von Weizsäcker will be speaking on the topic of Greening the Economy, Fringe or Core Business.

Ernst von Weizsäcker joined Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara as Dean in January 2006. Previously, he served as Policy Director at the United Nations Centre for Science and Technology for Development and was Director of the Institute for European Environmental Policy in Bonn, Germany. He spent nearly a decade as founding president for the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy in the North Rhine / Wesphalian Science Center in Germany. After its founding in 1991, the Wuppertal Institute became the largest climate policy think tank in Europe and earned Dr. von Weizsäcker recognition as one of the most respected climate policy experts on the continent. He attended several Conferences of the Parties (COP) of the Climate Convention, including the Kyoto COP 3 in 1997, from which Kyoto Protocol originated.

Dr. von Weizsäcker is a member of the Club of Rome, a global think tank devoted to improving society, and he served on the World Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalization. Prior to coming to the Bren School, he chaired the Environmental Committee of the Bundestag, the German parliament, overseeing the establishment of the carbon trading regime and the introduction of a powerful incentive system for renewable energies in Germany. From 2003 to 2004, he served as Germany’s representative on Tony Blair’s Study Group on climate policy, which prepared UK policies for the Gleneagles G8 Summit.

Enterprise Forum Pittsburgh to Host MIT’s President

Dr. Susan Hockfield to join MIT alumnus Richard Simmons of Allegheny Technologies for reception and dialogue

Please join the Enterprise Forum Pittsburgh on Friday, October 24th as they welcome MIT president Dr. Susan Hockfield to her first Forum appearance, together with Richard P. Simmons, Chairman Emeritus of Allegheny Technologies. The evening begins with a reception, followed by a lively dialogue between our guests about the role of academic institutions in the innovation economy.

“We’re thrilled to welcome President Hockfield,” says Tim Cunningham, the Forum’s board chair. “She’s right at the intersection of where universities meet innovation, which is also our focus here in Pittsburgh. Video Games in the 21st Century

Video Games in the 21st Century: Economic Contributions of the U.S. Entertainment Software Industry is the first study that quantifies the specific contributions of the U.S. entertainment software industry to the nation’s economy. Conducted by Economists Incorporated and released by the Entertainment Software Association in November 2007, the study found that from 2003 to 2006, the entertainment software industry’s annual growth rate exceeded 17 percent. Over the same period, the entire U.S. economy grew at a less than four percent rate. Last year, sales nearly quadrupled from 1996 figures to $9.5 billion. And, despite uncertain times in other economic sectors, recent data shows that current 2008 sales are up 30 percent over last year.

The gaming industry has impacted the Pittsburgh economy and will continue to be a valuable part of our regional growth. Join The Economic Club of Pittsburgh and Michael D. Gallagher, President and CEO, Entertainment Software Association, as they explore how this billion-dollar industry is growing in leaps and bounds. Pittsburgh Technology Council members may attend the event at the “Member” rate.
