Emerson Enhances Ovation® SCADA Capabilities for More Effective Management

Emerson Process Management recently announced that its Bristol® ControlWave® remote terminal unit (RTU) technology has been fully integrated into its Ovation® SCADA platform, translating into a number of benefits for municipalities and investor-owned utilities. These benefits include better management of distributed systems and remote sites, improved water/wastewater process control reliability, and reduced operations and maintenance (O&M) costs.

Traditionally, SCADA systems poll RTUs for information either at specified time intervals or on demand. With the tight integration of the Bristol ControlWave RTU, the Ovation SCADA platform now features a configurable polling mechanism. This allows operators the option of having the RTUs send data directly to the SCADA server or central Ovation control system only when values change. Not typically available from other SCADA suppliers, this “report by exception” messaging scheme not only optimizes bandwidth but also provides real-time alarming of remote sites.

The Ovation SCADA system now also offers users access to more data than was available previously. If configured for periodic polling, the Ovation SCADA solution with ControlWave RTU technology has the capability to buffer and time stamp data – including alarms – then send it directly to the Ovation historian so that no data is “lost” in the event of a communication failure. Conversely, when most other SCADA systems are configured to transmit data during specific time intervals, only a “snapshot” of information is relayed back to the SCADA server. This is less than optimal, as alarms or other abnormalities can be missed if they take place between polling intervals or during a communication outage.

The availability of better and more complete information through the integrated Ovation SCADA solution is advantageous for early detection of equipment failure, more efficient deployment of field crews, and provides a higher degree of data integrity for helping to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

The integrated Ovation SCADA solution also offers enhanced reliability features unique to Emerson. These include fault-tolerant data transmission through redundant communication schemes as well as an additional security mechanism that ensures the RTU is communicating only with the SCADA server or central Ovation control system and not being intercepted by an outside source.

Emerson’s Ovation SCADA solution is part of the company’s broad portfolio of automation, analytical and optimization solutions for the water/wastewater industry. These include the PlantWeb® digital plant architecture which leverages the Ovation control system, Bristol ControlWave RTU technology, AMS® Suite of predictive maintenance software, intelligent field devices, valve automation and asset optimization solutions. The end result is a single seamless system that integrates real-time process and equipment information with transaction-based enterprise business systems. A number of major metropolitan areas – including Detroit, Chicago, San Diego and Washington, D.C., as well as smaller municipalities – rely on Emerson’s scalable Ovation SCADA solutions to oversee their water and wastewater infrastructures.

“We understand the operational, regulatory and financial issues facing the water and wastewater industries and know that efficiently and expertly managing water and wastewater treatment processes and systems plays an important role in enabling municipalities and investor-owned utilities to effectively address these challenges,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “The availability of our enhanced SCADA capabilities is indicative of Emerson’s ongoing commitment to embracing and integrating the latest technologies so that organizations are able to best serve their communities not only today, but well into the future.”

Emerson to Automate PLTU 2 Banten-Labuan Plant in Indonesia

Emerson Process Management announced yesterday that it has received a contract to apply its Plantweb® digital plant architecture with the Ovation® expert control system at the PLTU 2 Banten-Labuan power plant. This new two-unit, 600-MW coal-fired plant is being built in Indonesia’s Banten Longwan Province. The contract was awarded by Chengda Engineering Corporation of China. Emerson is engineering and installing the project.

Emerson’s comprehensive PlantWeb solution includes deployment of the Ovation control system for monitoring and control of the boiler, turbine, burner management system, auxiliary system, which includes water treatment and coal handling, and balance of plant processes. Emerson will supply a total of 33 Ovation redundant controllers (15 per unit, as well as three that will be common to both units) and 23 workstations (seven per unit, plus six common to both units and three for the auxiliary system). The Ovation system, built specifically to meet the unique needs of the power generation industry, will monitor and control a total of 17,000 hard I/O points.

“Initially we selected Emerson because of their proven automation and control technologies,” said Dai Wu, senior engineer, Chengda Engineering Corporation of China. “Since we’ve been working with them, we have become just as impressed with the caliber of their personnel and their in-depth knowledge of power generating equipment and processes.”

”We’re gratified by Chengda’s confidence in Emerson’s state-of-the-art control solutions,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “We’re proud to count them among an ever-growing number of organizations around the world that have chosen PlantWeb and Ovation technology to enhance plant reliability and performance.”

Emerson Modernizing Four Units at India’s Tanda Thermal Power Station

Emerson has already completed replacement of outdated manual controls for Unit 3 BMS, FSSS in record time as part of NTPC’s larger initiative to improve system reliability and availability

Emerson Process Management announced today it has been selected by NTPC Ltd. to modernize obsolete controls at the Tanda Thermal Power Station, a 4×110 MW plant located in Uttar Pradesh, India. NTPC is the largest power utility in India and the sixth-largest thermal power generator in the world.

Emerson is installing its Ovation® expert control system at all four units of the coal-fired power plant as part of a comprehensive renovation and maintenance project. A noteworthy challenge for the control system aspect of the project was the timeframe required for Unit 3 – the first unit slated for modernization.

Emerson received the contract for Unit 3 after the previous vendor was unable to meet the original schedule. The control system installation and unit commissioning needed to take place during a 90-day scheduled outage, which began the last week of March 2008. A mere three months after contract award, Emerson, which has a proven track record meeting aggressive deadlines, was able to complete the project during a specified 70-day window within the outage.

At all four Tanda units, the Ovation system will monitor and control the burner management system (BMS) and furnace safeguard supervisory system (FSSS). The Ovation system, designed to meet the specific challenges of the power generation industry, will also interface to existing BHEL boiler and turbine controls. In all, the Ovation system will manage 10,000 I/O points (2,500 points per unit). The contract also calls for Emerson to supply a total of 40 Ovation redundant controllers (10 per unit) and 36 workstations (nine per unit).

Emerson’s local India Engineering Center is designing, engineering and supervising the project.

“We know that customers turn to Emerson not only for our industry-leading Ovation control technology, but also for top-notch project execution,” said Bob Yeager, president of the Power & Water Solutions division of Emerson. “Our ability to meet NTPC’s challenging deadline is rewarding, as it demonstrates how Emerson’s dedicated employees will do whatever it takes to succeed at our number-one objective: ensuring customer satisfaction.”
