Pittsburgh Becomes Home to the United States Center for Energy Leadership

This is truly some massive news that has seemingly slipped through the local media cracks.

The proverbial “dream team” of Pittsburgh energy has just been formed. The potential for great things to happen around energy innovation is quite high as the chief executive officers of Pittsburgh-headquartered Plextronics, Westinghouse, Allegheny Energy, EQT, CONSOL Energy and BPL Global founded the United States Center for Energy Leadership (USCEL). The founding members of the Center are:

  • Andy Hannah, CEO of Plextronics
  • Aris Candris, CEO of Westinghouse
  • Paul Evanson, CEO of Allegheny Energy
  • Murry Gerber, CEO of EQT
  • J. Brett Harvey, CEO of CONSOL Energy
  • Keith Schaefer, CEO of BPL Global

According to Plextronics’ Andy Hannah, who was a catalyst for the formation of USCEL, the mission of the group is to establish a stable energy environment for the United States that includes energy independence, stable energy pricing and a portfolio approach to meeting increasing energy needs. USCEL will also advocate for new and innovative technological developments that will impact all of these areas. The group will also work to address specific governmental policy, investment and technology issues that have direct bearing on the energy industry.

Pitt and Westinghouse Agree to Broader Collaboration

When industry and acamedia get together, great things can happen. Pitt and Westinghouse are both seeing the benefits of collaboration and are looking to take their relationship to a whole other level. We’re talking “Master Research Agreement.” Give this a spin:

The University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering has entered a Master Research Agreement with the Westinghouse Electric Company that will allow for easier collaboration between researchers at Pittsburgh’s largest university and one of the city’s most successful engineering companies.

Pitt is the first university to sign a Master Research Agreement with Westinghouse that covers all legal issues between the two institutions. Instead of addressing these issues for each individual project—which can delay the start of research—University researchers and Westinghouse now must simply provide a budget and an explanation of the scope of work to commence a research study.

“Our relationship has been growing over the last several years, and this was the next step in building a stronger collaboration in research and development between Westinghouse and the University of Pittsburgh,” said John Goossen, director of the Westinghouse Science and Technology Department.

The agreement also builds on the established partnership between the Swanson School and Westinghouse, said Mark Redfern, the school’s associate dean for research. When Pitt developed its nuclear engineering certificate program, engineers and managers from Westinghouse joined their colleagues from Bechtel Bettis, Inc., and FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company on an advisory committee that helped design the curriculum to ensure that students learn the most relevant and up-to-date information. Pitt’s program launched in 2007 and is the only nuclear engineering program in Western Pennsylvania. Experts from Westinghouse and the other partner companies serve as adjunct professors.

ThoughtForm Principals to Be Celebrated at National Gala

The nationally prestigious AIGA design organization will present the AIGA Fellow Award to local ThoughtForm Inc. principals Reed Agnew, Don Moyer, and Grant Smith on September 18 during its fifth annual Design Legends Gala in New York City. As the first Western Pennsylvania recipients of the AIGA Fellow Award, the honorees will join 17 other Fellows at Chelsea Piers, along with 2008 recipients of the AIGA Medal; The AIGA Corporate Leadership Award; The Winterhouse Award for Design Writing & Criticism; and The 2008/2009 Worldstudio AIGA Scholarships.

“As the first AIGA Pittsburgh members to receive the Fellow award, Reed, Don and Grant have secured a special place in our profession’s history,” Greg Gibilisco, president of AIGA Pittsburgh, said. AIGA Pittsburgh announced the award at a reception in May.

The new Fellows began their careers together in the 1970s when they joined a lineup of sophisticated visual thinkers at the new Westinghouse Corporate Design Center, which was being formed by design consultants Eliot Noyes and Paul Rand. Reed, Don, and Grant went on to cofound the design firm Agnew Moyer Smith in 1980.

Renamed ThoughtForm on its 25th anniversary, the firm is nationally known for making complex information clear and engaging through thoughtfully designed visual communications. With a team of 40, it develops brand identities, interactive media, environments, packaging, and print communications for clients such as GlaxoSmithKline, UnitedHealthcare, Caterpillar, and Eaton.

The  AIGA Fellow Award recognizes designers and other major figures in the profession who have made significant contributions to the field and have raised the standards of excellence in the community. Designated by the Pittsburgh Chapter and recognized nationally, the Fellow Award celebrates the impact of this profession and helps elevate awareness of the value of design.

“The Fellow Award is a great honor and our partners have contributed to advancing the quality of design in this community and the world at large throughout their careers. They have made an important difference to how people experience information,” says Norm Goldberg, a stakeholder in the firm. “They’ve quietly mentored a generation of designers and have elevated the quality of communication through their world-class practice. All of us are excited to see them recognized in this way.”

Developers’ Showcase Illuminates Regional Business Opportunities

Top National Site Selectors to Provide Expert Advice on the Competitive Advantages of the Region for Business Attraction, Retention

On Wednesday, July 30, NAIOP Pittsburgh (National Association of Industrial and Office Properties) will host its second Developers’ Showcase at The Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods. The event will showcase the opportunities surrounding the region’s key industries and their projected impact on Pittsburgh’s 21st-century economic prosperity.

The theme of the 2008 NAIOP Developers’ Showcase is “Pittsburgh:  Energy Works Here!” The keynote speaker will be Westinghouse Electric Company Senior Vice President of Human Resources and Corporate Relations Tony Greco.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the NAIOP Showcase includes networking, exhibits and a panel discussion featuring up to ten top national site selectors. The site selectors will share insights and advice relevant to economic development in the Pittsburgh region. Site selectors are experts who specialize in recommending the optimal location for a business based on accessibility to customers, as well as considerations relative to space costs, size, zoning regulations, investment tax credits and the availability and quality of the workforce. These experts play a critical role in influencing local economic development by helping domestic and international companies decide where to locate new facilities. The majority of all Fortune 500 companies hire site selectors to identify their optimal locations. Co-sponsored by the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, the group of site selection experts is visiting Pittsburgh from July 30 – August 2.

“With Westinghouse Electric Company as a client, I spent a considerable amount of time working with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and with the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance. Both responded creatively and aggressively to the challenges presented to them, amid extreme competition from other states, to win the Westinghouse headquarters. I believe Pittsburgh to be a region that understands how to leverage its strengths,” said Ann Marie Woessner, a national site selector with The Staubach Company, now part of Jones Lang LaSalle. Woessner will be among the national site selectors visiting Pittsburgh this July.

A high-tech hub, the Pittsburgh region capitalizes on key industries, including information and communications technology, life sciences and advanced manufacturing – along with energy. Pittsburgh is growing from within and from outside the region. Nationally, companies continue to discover the region – attracted by its low cost to do business, high quality of life, ample workforce and central location – and companies are locating or expanding here.

“As an emerging key industry for the Pittsburgh region, energy has a bright future,” said Lynn DeLorenzo, chair of the 2008 NAIOP Showcase and principal at DeLorenzo & Co. LLC.

“Regional business developers are preparing for the business opportunities surrounding energy and our region’s other key sectors. That’s strategic. The products, services and technologies that hail from the region’s companies touch the world and today’s hottest industries, such as energy. Pittsburgh is the place to locate or expand a company with a business portfolio that complements our region’s strengths,” said DeLorenzo.

“In 2007, Westinghouse announced the landmark decision to locate its world headquarters in Butler County, part of the Pittsburgh region, and broke ground for a facility that will be the largest single-tenant campus in Pennsylvania history and a lynchpin for southwestern Pennsylvania’s position as a global hub for nuclear energy technology development,” said Pittsburgh Regional Alliance President Dewitt Peart.

“With the widespread renewed interest in nuclear energy, and in light of Westinghouse’s decision, the Pittsburgh region is already starting to see a surge in spin-off activity related to advanced manufacturing and the nuclear energy supply chain by companies working with Westinghouse. The potential is huge.  Businesses capable of contributing to the region’s global supply chain for energy and related industries will discover a sweet spot here,” said Peart.

“Westinghouse and the worldwide nuclear power industry are experiencing significant growth,” said Westinghouse Senior Vice President Tony Greco. “We are pleased to be able to make the investments here that will benefit our industry, our employees and the entire southwest Pennsylvania region. We are equally pleased to be renewing, for the 21st century, our long-standing relationship with the region that has served as our historic home base.”

In addition to the national site selection experts, showcase attendees are expected to include regional elected officials, business investors, economic developers and commercial real estate brokers.

To register for the Developers’ Showcase, call NAIOP at 412.928.8303. On-site registration is also available.
